REDWOOD CITY – The 2024 Cañada College baseball season is officially underway. Unfortunately for the Colts, it got off to a rough start as Cañada dropped both games of a two-game opening weekend set against visiting Sacramento City College.
On Friday, the Colts fell 5-1 in their season opener. That was followed by an 8-3 setback on Saturday to the Panthers.
Cañada got off to a good start on Friday, scoring the game's opening run in the bottom of the first inning. Max Ross smacked a triple and came in to score on a two-out RBI-single from John Paul Avila.
But that would be all for the Cañada offense. Despite collecting 9 hits, the Colts left 11 runners on base.
Ross had a huge season debut for the Colts as he went a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate with a stolen base.
Connor Uter took the loss in the opening-day start. He allowed 3 runs (2 earned) and 3 hits over 4 innings. Gabriel Levine pitched well in relief, striking out 7 batters over 4 innings while giving up just 1 run and a pair of hits.
Saturday saw the Colts fall behind early. Sacramento City put up a run in the top of the first, another in the third, and secured the game by scoring five runs in the fourth inning.
Down 8-0, Cañada rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the eighth. Chris Arce smashed a two-run home run for the big blow of the frame. Arce went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI to lead the Colts at the plate.
Zak Sullivan had a rough start for Cañada to take the loss, allowing 6 runs and 3 hits over 3 2/3 innings.
Cañada, now 0-2, is back in action next Friday (Feb. 2) when the Colts host Santa Barbara City College in the first of a two-game series. Game 2 is set for Saturday (Feb. 3) at 1 p.m.
