2018 Cañada Colts Hall of Fame Inductees
CATHERINE ABRAMS, WOMEN’S SOCCER
As a local phenome, Catherine Abrams attended Terra Nova High School from 1998-2002 prior to leading the Women’s Soccer program beginning in 2002. A standout throughout the Peninsula, Catherine accumulated 1st Team All Coast Conference awards in each of her seasons as a member of the 2002 & 2003 Cañada Women’s Soccer Team. To finish her sophomore season, Catherine also was awarded 1st Team All NorCal awards in 2003. Exemplifying the meaning of student athlete, Catherine accepted an opportunity to finish her career in soccer at Cal Poly. Presently, Catherine is serving as Lieutenant for the San Francisco Fire Department.
RAPHAEL BOURNIGAL, BASEBALL
A true professional, Raphael Bournigal embodies what it means to be a Cañada Colt. His Colt career spanned 1984 through 1986. While competing at Cañada, Raphael was awarded 1985 & 1986 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team All Nor-Cal. In addition, Raphael was named 1st Team AllAmerica for the 1986 season. He then transferred to Florida State University where he became a member of Florida State’s 1997 College World Series Baseball Team. Raphael enjoyed a Major League Career spanning 14 years, 7 of which in the MLB. He has played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1992-1994, Oakland A’s in 1992-1998, and the Seattle Mariners in 1999.
TIM BOWLER, MEN’S BASKETBALL & BASEBALL
Not too many athletes have dominated the hardwood and diamond the way Tim Bowler has. Beginning his career at Capuchino High School, Tim was a high school standout from 1980-1984 prior to committing to Cañada. As a Colt, Tim competed in both Men’s Basketball and Baseball from 1984-1987. As a basketball player, Tim received 1st Team All-Conference in 1986. As a Baseball player, Tim also earned 1st Team AllConference. After competition, Tim decided to make the transition from player to coach. From 1989-1994, Tim was Mills High School Head Baseball Coach. From 1994-2002, Tim continued as Head Baseball Coach for Menlo Atherton High School, even doubling his duties as the Head Basketball Coach from 1994-2008. A true advocate for sports, Tim is Owner of “Make it Simple, Make it Fun” Youth Sports Business.
RONALD CALLOWAY, BASEBALL
Ronald Calloway’s decorated career began in 1991-1994 at James Lick High School in San Francisco. In just one dominant season at Cañada, Ronald earned 1997’s 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All Nor-Cal, and 1st Team All-American. Ronald continued his dominance by being drafted into Major League Baseball in 1997, playing for the Arizona Diamond Backs and Montreal Expos in 2003 & 2004.
EDUARDO ESTEBAN, MEN’S TENNIS
Eduardo’s celebrated career dates back to 1974 to 1978 for Instituto Ausias March. In two seasons as a Colt Tennis player, Eduardo earned the 1982 State Singles Champion Award, 1982 & 1983 State Doubles Championship Award and State Team Championship. As a Division I transfer to the University of California, Berkeley, Eduardo continued his success as the 1984 Nor-Cal Doubles Champion.
CARRIE GANN, WOMEN’S SOCCER
A star just outside the backyard of Cañada in nearby Woodside High School, Carrie Gann accomplished much success throughout her tenure as a Colts Soccer player. Graduating high school in 1993, Carrie enrolled in Cañada where she earned herself 1993’s 1st Team All-Conference. The following year, Carrie outdid herself by winning 1994’s 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All Nor-Cal, and Coast Conference Most Valuable Player. Her triple threat accomplishments garnered much recognition throughout the Bay Area, where she eventually accepted a roster spot on University of California, Berkeley’s Women’s Soccer Team in 1995.
BRIAN GOMES, MEN’S BASKETBALL
A star for the Mustangs of Capuchino High School, Brian Gomes quickly garnered recognition for his skillset on the hardwood. Arriving to Cañada in 1995, Brian made an immediate impact for Colts Men’s Basketball Team. In 1997, Brain earned 1st Team All-Conference, All State Selection, and Coast Conference Most Valuable Player. His success carried on into the next level of competition, where he transferred to Westmont College from 1997-1999. At Westmont, Brian earned 1st Team All-GSAC and Most Valuable Player honors in 1998, along with being named 1st Team AllGSAC and 1st Team All-American in 1999. Brian then signed a contract to player Professional Basketball in Melbourne, Australia in 2000.
CHIP HOOPER, MEN’S TENNIS
With an illustrious Tennis career, Chip Hooper has earned his place as one of Cañada’s greatest Tennis players. A product of Gunn High School, Chip took the Colts Tennis program by storm in just one year. Throughout 1976-1977, Chip earned State Singles Semi-Finalist, State Doubles Champion, and State Team Champion. He then transferred to the University of Arkansas, where he received 1980 ITCA/ITA All-American Singles, 1981 ITCA/ITA All-American Singles, and 1981 ITA Indoor National Singles Champion. On the ATP Pro Tour, Chip earned Pro ATP Rookie of the Year honors. At the peak of his career, Chip was ranked #16 in the world for Singles.
KRISTINA LEYDECKER, WOMEN’S SOCCER
A dominant player throughout the Peninsula, Kristina Leydecker earned every individual award possible throughout a career. After graduating from Terra Nova in 2003, Kristina made her mark on the Cañada Women’s Soccer program from 2003-2006. In her first season, Kristina earned 1st Team All-Conference in 2003. In 2004, she won 1st Team All-Conference again while being recognized as the Coast Conference Most Valuable Player and earning the Silvano Vial Award. Kristina stayed local and played for Menlo College where her accolades didn’t stop. In 2006, she earned Menlo College’s Offensive Most Valuable Player. In 2007, she earned 1st Team Cal Pac recognition while also being named the Cal Pac Offensive Player of the Year.
CLAYTON MADDEN, MEN’S BASKETBALL
A natural born leader, Clayton Madden had a stellar basketball career which began in the city of Bakersfield. A 1991 graduate of South High School, Clayton played for 2013 Hall of Fame Inductee Coach Mike Legarza’s Men’s Basketball Team. In each of his seasons at Cañada, Clayton received 1991-1992 & 1992-1993 1st Team All-Conference. In his sophomore year, Clayton upped his accolades and was names 1st Team All-America for the 1992-1993 season. His records speak for themselves, as he then transferred to the University of California, Santa Barbara from 1993-1995. While at UCSB, Clayton received multiple awards, such as being named the 1993- 1994 Team Captain, 1994-1995 Most Inspirational Player Award, and 1994-1959 1st team All-Conference. Continuing in his duty as a leader, Clayton presently serves as a Bakersfield Police Officer.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
TOM MOHR
Tom Mohr has been a greatly respected educator in San Mateo County for almost 60 years. In his early years, Tom spent teaching chemistry and mathematics in North County. He was a principal of 3 High Schools before he assumed duties of an Associate Superintendent in the San Mateo Union High School District. He was later to be named District Superintendent and served 9 years before retiring. After a career with the High School District, Tom became President of Cañada College. In every leadership position, he strongly supported the formation of exemplary athletic programs, believing that education coupled with competition, was the most effective means of developing the whole person, honoring the lasting values inherent in athletic competition of discipline, integrity, leadership and social responsibility. His devotion to these values was an important factor in Cañada College’s enduring source of pride, respect, and success to all students and student athletes.
