Cañada College mourns the loss of former coach Frank Mangiola
Former Cañada College soccer Frank Mangiola passed away on August 5 at the age of 83. The hall of fame coach will not only be remembered for his achievements on the soccer pitch but for the numerous young lives he also impacted off the field.
Prior to coaching, the San Francisco native was a three-sport athlete at Balboa High School and went on to play soccer at San Jose State University, earning all-state honors three times and All-America honors in 1965.
Mangiola was selected for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1964, but was unable to participate in the Olympic qualifications after being involved in a serious car accident. Mangiola was drafted by the Oakland Clippers of the North American Soccer League but opted to go into coaching.
Mangiola coached men's soccer at Cañada from 1990-2005 and led his team to 15 state playoff appearances. His squads won five Coast Conference titles, reached the state Final Four three times and advanced to the state championship final once. His Cañada program produced 6 All-Americans.
Along with Cañada College, Mangiola was a United States Soccer Federation staff coach for 14 years and an assistant coach for the SF Bay Blackhawks professional soccer team. He garnered numerous coaching awards, including National Junior College Coach of the Year (1999) and the National Coaches Association of America Coach of the Year (2001).
In 2014, he was inducted into the Cañada College Hall of Fame. He is also a member of California Community College Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame (2006), the Peninsula Hall of Fame (2011) and Skyline College Hall of Fame (2011). In 2010, Frank was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at San Jose State.
Mangiola is survived by his wife Ines, his daughter Johanna, son Mark, as well as with numerous grandchildren.
A memorial service for Mangiola will be held at the Mission San Jose chapel in Fremont on September 6 at 11 a.m. It will be followed by a reception at Casa Bella in Sunol.
